We All Want Weight Loss That Works
It’s a little after January but most of us have probably put lose weight into our resolutions for the New Year. Whether it’s a few pounds gained over the holidays, post baby weight, or weight gained over a lifetime; everyone is looking for weight loss that works. That’s great but we’re all impatient. We also want it to be fast and painless. Sorry folks, that is unlikely to happen.
Ok, you will just go on a crash diet and drop those 20 pounds in a few weeks. That is a bad idea. If you suddenly restrict calories severely your body thinks it is going to starve and immediately goes into survival mode. What does that mean? It means your metabolism slows so your body can hang on to that fat in case you never eat again. I know you don’t want to hear it but the most successful weight loss programs hinge on changing your eating habits, not starving your self. I can say from experience that the minute I say “I will NOT eat any cookies;” I start to dream about cookies and become obsessed with getting just one. Of course if it is Fig Newton’s; just one becomes an entire bag.
There are a few things that are very important for your success. Don’t exclude any food from your diet. Portion control is the key to your success. A serving of meat should be the size of your palm. What? That’s nothing, that’s two bites for Heaven’s sake. You won’t starve if you fill the rest of your plate with healthy things like vegetables. Your mother was right. You do need to eat your vegetables. If you don’t know what a serving looks like; measure it out and see. My favorite thing is to use a breakfast plate. The plate is small. I can fill to overflowing and not over eat. They actually make plates that have lines showing where your meat, vegetables, and grains should fit.
I think one reason Weight Watchers and other programs like it have been around for so many years is because they work. They don’t eliminate things you like from your diet. They teach you to make better choices and control your portions. If you don’t really have time to cook and can afford it; programs like Nutrisystem and Jenny Craig will do all the work for you. You will learn what a serving size looks like and most programs offer support in the way of meetings or individual counselors. If meetings are not your thing, you can do Weight Watchers online now.
One thing I have not mentioned is exercise. I know, I know; you hate to exercise. Most of us do hate it. If you cannot go to gym; you can walk. Park farther from the store and walk around. Get up from your desk and move around once an hour. Take the stairs from time to time. Take advantage of exercise tapes or TV shows that guide you through exercises. My husband loves a stationary bike. I found it to be very handy for hanging clothes. It’s an individual choice for sure. Pick an activity you like and you will be more likely to stick with it. Enlist a friend or co-worker to walk with you during lunch. The more support you have, the more likely you are to succeed.
It may take longer to lose weight sensibly; but think of it this way. If you do right; you’ll never had to worry about it again. Your lifestyle changes will keep you on track forever.
