It would be wonderful if we could just take weight loss tablets and lose the extra pounds that plague us. It is not quite that simple. Weight loss tablets may be sold over the counter or as prescriptions and usually take one of two forms; appetite suppressors or fat absorption inhibitors. They are meant for short term use, usually six months or less. Most are not approved for long term use.

Appetite suppressors act on two brain chemicals, serotonin or catecholamine that affects mood and appetite. They trick the body into thinking it is not hungry or that it is full. Fat absorption inhibitors prevent the body from breaking down and absorbing fat eaten in your meals. That sounds pretty simple, doesn’t it? Prescription appetite suppressors are often used in severely obese patients a short period of time, usually about six months. Used in the short term, they may reduce obesity related risks. They are sometimes less effective as the body becomes used to them.

Xenacal is now sold over-the-counter as Alli. It does prevent some of the fat you eat from being broken down and absorbed. This does not mean you can feast on fried chicken and French fries. If you consume too much fat, the side effects can be downright unpleasant; gas, diarrhea, and stool leakage. When taken as directed, it has proven to be moderately successful. You still have to be responsible for making wise food choices. Most weight loss occurs within the first six months of use. Studies have not been conducted on use for over two years.

There are a few concerns that you should discuss with your doctor. Currently prescription weight loss drugs with the exception of xenacal are controlled substances. The doctor must follow strict guidelines when prescribing these drugs as they can become addictive. Their effectiveness tends to diminish after about six months and it is not clear whether this is due to the body’s increased tolerance or that the drug just doesn’t work as well after that period of time.

Most weight loss tablets are simply tools to help a person through dietary changes which will be necessary to achieve a long lasting weight loss. The pills will not do the work for you. You will still be required to change your eating habits and get some exercise if you want to lose the weight for good. Working with your doctor and possibly a nutritionist will help you to achieve the best results.
