Weight Loss Surgery Is Not For Sissies

While weight loss surgery may seem like an easy option for those who have tried and failed to change their eating habits numerous times; keep in mind that any surgery is serious business. For those who are seriously obese or have health problems due to obesity; surgery may be suitable. Only your physician can tell you if youre a good candidate. Women who are eighty pounds overweight and men who are 100 pounds overweight and have a body mass index of forty or more indicates severe obesity. Life threatening problems like sleep apnea, diabetes, and heart disease due to excess weight are other reasons to consider weight loss surgery.

Any weight loss surgery should be accompanied by behavioral and nutritional plans to ensure lifelong success. The most frequently performed weight loss surgery is gastric bypass and accounts for more than 90% of weight loss surgeries.

In this procedure the surgeon makes a direct connection from the stomach to a lower segment of the small intestine. A 15-60cc gastric pouch is created with staples and attached to the shortened intestine bypassing lower part of the stomach and duodenum. Success rate is about 80%. After one year, weight loss averages between 65-80% of excess weight. After ten years 50-60% weight loss has been maintained and associated medical problems are improved in 90% of the patients. Some problems include poor absorption of iron, calcium, and vitamin B12 and may require nutritional supplements. Dumping syndrome, while not life threatening is very unpleasant. If too much sugar is consumed for example, you may experience nausea, diarrhea, weakness, sweating, and faintness. In some cases the stomach pouch can stretch. Some surgical risks include, bleeding, blood clots, leaks, strictures, and bowel obstruction, but most doctors believe the benefits outweigh the risks in severely obese patients.

Adjustable Gastric Band or Laparoscopic Band surgery is a purely restrictive approach to reducing the capacity of the stomach. The band is placed around the upper most part of the stomach and this induces an early feeling of fullness. You will eat less because it takes less food to satisfy your appetite. It is designed so that your band can be inflated or deflated at any time after surgery according to your weight loss requirements without further surgery. This may be achieved by injecting a fluid solution into a port placed under the skin. This procedure has the lowest death rate of any bariatric surgery. There is no cutting or stomach stapling and there is a low risk of malnutrition. Your weight loss will be slower than with a gastric bypass. You will need regular follow-up care for the best results. Although band slippage may occur, it is easily corrected.

If you and your physician feel that weight loss surgery is your best option; research it thoroughly and be prepared for a drastic change in the amount of food you can safely consume. If you work with your health care professionals; you may achieve the lasting weight loss that will have immense health benefits.
