Having weight loss support is one of the most important things to ensure success. Some people attend meetings, others have a diet buddy, and some people have online support in the form of groups or blogs. Its just nice to chat with someone who knows what you are going through. Losing weight is a challenge and having a partner, friend or spouse will make it easier.
I think that support is a big part of the continued success of Weight Watchers and T.O.P.S. Even Jenny Craig provides one on one counseling as does L.A. Weight Loss. To be honest, sometimes your spouse, family, and friends may not be the best support system. Your husband may like you the way you are. Your friend may not want you to look better than she does and your grandmother probably thinks you are perfect just the way you are. It is not uncommon for these people to sabotage your weight loss with the best of intentions.
Another thing that helps is having an exercise buddy. When one of you wants to slack off; the other will encourage you to continue. A little healthy competition never hurts either. The best thing in the world to have is a friend to call when you feel your will power failing you. When you attend meetings you may learn tips that have helped other people stay on track. Its fun to share recipes and celebrate each others progress. Its also nice to have a sympathetic ear when you fall off the wagon. There is no shame in asking for help.
People who are seriously obese may need to enter a program with a nutritionist and a counselor. Some people are food addicts and cannot be helped by diet alone. There are so many reasons we overeat and getting to root of that reason can help us to establish a more healthy relationship with food.
