Many of us would like to lose weight. It may just be 5 or 10 “vanity pounds,” or a more significant amount, but we all have one thing in common. We all want weight loss solutions that work. If they could be easy, not require us to give up food we love, or have to exercise; that would be a bonus. Sorry folks, it just does not happen that way. Few things of value come to us easily.

We’ve all heard it before and although we don’t like what we hear; it’s true. To lose weight you have to eat a sensible diet and get some exercise. You have to change your eating habits. Yes, if you eat only cabbage soup for weeks on end; you will lose weight. Once you go back to your normal eating patterns; you will be right back where you started. Highly restrictive diets do not work in the long run. You may feel virtuous eating tiny portions of food, but sooner or later that devil on your shoulder will win out.

Ok, let’s talk about a sensible eating plan. We won’t call it a diet. We also will not eliminate everything you love, but we will limit their portions. Aim for lean meat and eat smaller portions. Three ounces is about the size of your palm. Try to include fish several times a week. Fish has little fat and is healthy and delicious as long as you don’t beer batter and fry it. Add more vegetables to your diet.

Your mother was right. You should eat your vegetables. They will fill you up and don’t have a lot of calories unless you drown them in butter. Try to avoid processed food as much as you can. It is usually loaded with salt, fat, and sugar. Aim to eat more whole grains. Whole wheat pasta tastes very similar to regular pasta and has added protein. We’re just talking about little changes that will add up. Watch out for products labeled sugar-free. That does not make them calorie free. When they take out sugar, they add fat. Read the labels. Aim to get a little exercise every day. Walk a little during lunch or after dinner. Turn your already boring housework into a workout. Enlist a friend to exercise with you. Your little walk will be so much more fun if you have someone to gossip with.

If you don’t think you can do it alone; talk to your doctor about what he or she recommends. Try some of the weight loss programs readily available in your community. If you like a group setting; try Weight Watchers. You can do Weight Watchers online now if that’s your preference. Let’s say you hate to cook or are too busy to cook; try Nutrisystem, Jenny Craig, or some frozen dinners. There are lots to choose from and if you don’t have time to cook; a healthy meal is just minutes away. You do not have to rely on the fast food drive through.

Weight loss solutions may not be a piece of cake, but they don’t have to be awful. Indulge in a little dark chocolate every day. It will give you something to look forward too. Most importantly; if you goof up don’t use it as an excuse to quit. Just move forward the next day with your healthy eating plan and pretty soon it will be second nature.
