Achieving Safe Weight Loss

weight loss

There are millions of people who range from mildly overweight to dangerously obese. Whether you want to shed a few pounds to fit into your skinny jeans or lose a substantial amount of weight for health reasons, it is imperative to find a safe weight loss method. Luckily some of the dangerous weight loss drugs such as Ephedra and fen-phen have been banned for use by the FDA. However, there are still stimulant drugs for weight loss and dangers associated with different kinds of diets. In order to formulate a healthy weight loss plan, the first step is to see your doctor.

Your doctor will evaluate your weight, including your body mass index (BMI) and tell you what your target weight range should be. He or she should also do a physical to make sure you are healthy enough for a new diet and/or exercise plan. You and your doctor can discuss different options when it comes to weight loss so you can find a safe plan that is appealing to you. There are different approaches when it comes to shedding pounds, and often it depends on how much weight you need to lose.

Gastric bypass surgery and/or prescription weight loss drugs will only usually be recommended if you are obese and have already tried traditional diet and exercise programs with no success. As a first course of action your doctor will probably advise you to change your eating habits and start exercising regularly. Your new diet plan is basically going to be common sense, as you can imagine you will be advised to stay away from fried foods and sugar. But what you might not know is that eating six small meals per day rather than three big ones or skipping meals can boost the action of your metabolism.

Exercise is important also when it comes to safe weight loss. Even if you are obese, or you do have a medical condition like heart disease or high blood pressure, your doctor will probably tell you to exercise. You can start off with mild activity like gentle walking a few times per week and work up to more strenuous exercise over time. Exercise is not just for weight loss purposes; it is crucial to overall health and wellness. Studies show it is good for the body and the mind, some experts believe it is as effective as antidepressant therapy for some people.
